Star-Spangled Sangria

Star-Spangled Sangria | Well and Full | Fourth of July | #summer #cocktail #recipe

This sparkling, Star-Spangled Sangria is perfect for Fourth of July! Celebrate Independence Day with this delicious, berry-infused white wine sangria.

I might trademark this summer in my memories as Sangria Summer™. I don’t know why, but I’ve just been really enjoying all the sangrias! It’s probably due to the fact that I love mixing things. For example, when my bottles of shower gel are almost empty, I love combining them into a mega shower gel. It’s so much fun to have a totally unique scent from their combination!

In 2018, I came across a youtube video from creator Safiya Nygaard where she combined every single Bath and Body Works candle into one “Franken Candle” (h/t Frankenstein). For whatever reason I just loved that, and it got me into the habit of combining my own things. Plus, it’s a great way to prevent waste from things like shower gel, shampoo, soap, etc. by putting all the last dregs into one bottle.

I think this Star-Spangled Sangria is an extension of that hobby. It’s kind of a “kitchen sink” recipe – I tested this with a few different iterations of ingredients, and they all came out fantastic. But there are some guidelines you need to follow to ensure a harmonious sangria:

  1. Dry White Wine – you do not want a buttery, oaked Chardonnay for this recipe. We’re going for a light, refreshing, berry-y sangria. A rich and sweet white wine will completely clash with this!
  2. Berry-Flavored Vodka – I tried this recipe with Blue Ice Huckleberry vodka and Ciroc Red Berry vodka. Both were delicious! Because berry flavors are all so similar, your fave berry-flavored vodka is sure to be a success in this sangria.
  3. Berry-Flavored Seltzer – a continuation of the berry theme. I made this recipe with Waterloo Summer Berry seltzer for all tests, but I’m positive a strawberry, raspberry, or multi-berry seltzer would also be delicious. Just pick a berry seltzer you like, and it’ll be perfect for your sangria!

Theming this Star-Spangled Sangria for the Fourth of July

This Star-Spangled Sangria is perfect for your Fourth of July parties. To make the star shapes out of the banana and strawberries, I used this cookie cutter set from Amazon (affiliate link). My bananas were a little too small for the cookie cutter, so make sure you get the biggest ones possible for the best-looking stars. Same with the strawberries. Of course, if you can’t get your hands on the star cookie cutters, no worries! The berries will be perfectly delicious sliced. Also, if you want your sangria to be super-chilled, prep the sliced fruit beforehand and put them in the freezer. Frozen fruit will keep your sangria colder for longer!

One last thing – I do not recommend serving this with sparklers. I just did that for the photos! It should go without saying, but drinking anything with fire in it is NOT a good idea !!

I hope you enjoy this festive Independence Day Recipe as much as I do! Enjoy!

Star-Spangled Sangria FAQs

What are the ingredients for Star-Spangled Sangria?

In this recipe, I use white wine, vodka, seltzer, and fruit. There are tons and tons of variations for sangria recipes, but this one is crafted with Fourth of July cookouts and picnics in mind. This sangria is light and refreshing, perfect for a summer party!

What are the best fruits for white wine sangria?

This sangria is berry-flavored, so I’ve added in strawberries and blueberries. Plus, we have bananas as well to complete the red, white, and blue theme! Other sangrias may call for different fruits, but this one is a nod to patriotic colors!

Can you make sangria ahead of time?

You can definitely prep the fruit and the wine + vodka mixture ahead of time, but be sure to add in the seltzer right before serving, to ensure a fizzy sangria. If you put the seltzer in too far ahead of time, it’ll be flat when it’s time to serve the sangria.

Is this white wine sangria with vodka?

Yes! Berry-flavored vodka rounds out the berry theme of this sangria. Please do not sub the vodka for gin or tequila… those liquors are too strongly flavored and will overpower the berry flavor.

Can you make this white wine sangria with prosecco, cava, or champagne?

I haven’t tested this recipe with sparkling white wine, but you could definitely try it out with a dry bubbly! Just note that the end result will be very fizzy with the combination of bubbly and seltzer. If that’s your thing, go for it! If you do try it, please leave me a comment so I can learn how it turned out :)
