This vegetarian recipe is the perfect appetizer for a dinner party, or as an elevated everyday snack! Plus, each serving contains 10g of protein thanks to the ricotta!
For last month’s French Bistro-themed dinner party, my friend Scott made a lovely sourdough loaf to share. Luckily for me, we had some leftovers of the bread, so I knew I wanted to make something tasty with it. Cue this Ricotta Toast with Honey! This is the perfect recipe for homemade bread because it’s simple enough to let the flavor of the bread shine, but flavorful enough to really be delicious. The creamy, slightly tangy ricotta pairs so nicely with the salt and honey.
I do notice that as I get older, I’ve been more interested in sweet and salty dishes (which has NOT been the case in the past!) I regularly make flavor mash-up recipes now, such as this sweet + spicy Carrot Salad with Zhoug Sauce, or this Mango Radish Slaw. It is so fun to see how my palate and cooking style changes throughout the years. This type of reflection is especially meaningful today, because as I write this, it is the TEN YEAR anniversary of Well and Full! That’s right, I hit publish on my very first post on May 5th, 2015. In celebration of this milestone, I hosted a fabulous dinner party as part of my new series (Dinner Stories: The Triumphs and Travails of Hosting). I’m still working on editing the footage, but I know you all will love it!
And I truly have to thank everyone reading this, because without you, this blog would not be possible. For all of those who have followed me on Instagram, made recipes, or taken time out of their day to leave a comment – THANK YOU! From the bottom of my heart, I am so, so grateful for each and every one of you. And I know that’s kind of a trite thing that every blogger/influencer says, but I truly do not take my readers for granted one bit. I’ve never felt entitled to any sort of audience, so I always try to improve my craft and put out delicious recipes for everyone. So thank you all, and here’s to all the years to come!! :)

Ricotta Toast with Honey
Ingredients
- 8 oz Ricotta about 1 cup
- 2 Tsp Honey
- 1/4 Tsp Sea Salt
- Black Pepper to taste, optional
- 2 Slices Sourdough Bread each cut in half
Instructions
- Add the ricotta, honey, salt, and pepper to a food processor, and blend on high for about 45-60 seconds. Then, scrape down the sides with a spatula, and remix for another 30 seconds, so that all ricotta is smooth. Taste, and adjust seasonings to your liking.
- Take two slices of sourdough bread and cut each in half. Then, toast the bread.
- Add the ricotta mixture to a piping bag or a plastic gallon bag. Cut off the end of the piping bag (or corner of the plastic bag), making an opening about 1/2" wide (though it doesn't have to be exact).
- Pipe the mixture evenly onto each toast in a squiggle pattern, as shown in the photos.
- Serve with an extra drizzle of honey, if you'd like, and enjoy!

Ricotta Toast FAQs
What is ricotta?
Ricotta is a soft, unaged Italian cheese made from the whey (the liquid left over from the production of other cheeses like mozzarella). The name “ricotta” literally means “recooked” in Italian. This refers to the process of making ricotta, where the whey is heated a second time to coagulate into its final form.
What does ricotta taste like?
Ricotta tastes fairly mild, milky, and slightly sweet, which makes it delicious for sweet AND savory applications. The texture is soft and creamy, though with a bit of a grainy consistency due to the small curds. I would say it’s more similar in texture to labneh or soft cream cheese than a more “solid” cheese like provolone.
Is this Ricotta Toast made with egg?
No, but a jammy 7-minute hard-boiled egg would be a delicious topping!
Can you make a savory Ricotta Toast?
To make this recipe less sweet and more savory, simply omit the honey, and add some high-quality extra virgin olive oil instead. You can also top these toasts with fresh herbs to amp up the savory flavor.
What are some good toppings for Ricotta Toast?
To jazz up this Ricotta Toast recipe, try:
- Adding fresh, leafy herbs on top
- Drizzling with a flavored olive oil, like garlic or lemon-infused
- Adding spicy chili flakes or Aleppo pepper
- Topping with a little lemon zest and juice for a more zingy bite
- Adding a fried egg or a hard-boiled egg
- Drizzling with a little hot sauce, like Cholula!
