This Grapefruit Detox Smoothie is a great addition to any healthy eating regimen, made with cleansing ingredients like grapefruit and mint!
I am adding this note to the beginning of all my detox recipes. There is no such thing as a “detox”, as the word is used colloquially. The human body naturally removes toxins through the liver, kidneys, digestive system, and other pathways – no juice cleanses required. However, I like to use the word detox in my recipes because of its connotations – starting fresh, eating nutritious food, and helping your body be its healthiest self. I hope you enjoy these recipes!
One last healthy eating recipe before January ends! This month I have been focusing on eating healthy, nutrient-dense recipes to maximize my nutritional intake. Growing up, I ate the Standard American Diet – refined carbs, meat, dairy, few fruits and vegetables. Even when I decided to adopt a vegetarian diet at the age of 13, I didn’t eat that many nutrient-dense foods. I didn’t even have kale for the first time until after I had graduated from college! But then I decided to follow a plant-based diet when I turned 22, and that’s when I started learning about nutrients and healthy foods. I started eating things like kale, quinoa, avocados, and lots of fruits and vegetables.
This journey has completely changed how I view my eating. Before, I would eat something like a bowl of pasta for dinner – a huge load of carbohydrates. But now, I’ll make pasta with beans, avocado, and veggies, a healthy balance of carbohydrates, fats, and protein. Making little changes to my everyday meals has made me feel really confident in my own body, knowing that I’m making the choice to nourish it. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll still eat some of my favorite foods that aren’t so nutritious (hello potato chips!), but now they’re part of a more balanced diet.
There’s still a lot I have to learn about nutrition, but I’m excited to be heading down the right path for me. It’s been deeply rewarding to learn about plant foods and how they can heal and nourish your body. But I wanted to add a quick note that I do NOT judge someone if their diet looks different than mine. This blog is not meant to tell anyone that eating is one-size-fits-all. I’m doing what’s right for me, but I recognize that it may not be the right thing for someone else. Everybody’s body is different, and it’s so important to find what works for YOU. Cheers to that! :)
Grapefruit Detox Smoothie
- Juice from 2 Grapefruits
- 1 Cup Frozen Mango
- 1 Cup Frozen Pineapple
- 2-3 Fresh Spearmint Leaves
- 2-3 Ice Cubes
- Water to thin if needed
- Add all ingredients into your blender and blend on high until smooth and creamy.
