Celebrate spooky season with this hauntingly delicious Halloween Hot Chocolate! It’s velvety smooth, perfectly spiced, and super chocolatey. Don’t forget to top it with homemade whipped cream and Halloween sprinkles for extra fun!
I recently joined some blogger Facebook groups for fun. I love working from home, and being able to keep an eye on my senior dog, Ivy. But being a “one-woman” business often can be difficult and isolating. There’s no one way to be a food blogger / recipe developer, and not having coworkers often means not having mentorship or help. So joining blogger Facebook groups is the next best thing!
One of the groups I joined was one where people can request recipes for roundups on their websites. After joining this group, I belatedly realized that I am WOEFULLY behind on holiday recipes here at Well and Full. Like I’m pretty sure I have TWO Halloween recipes here on the blog. Well, today I’m changing that!!
This Halloween Hot Chocolate is so fun and festive for the season. It’s nothing super fancy, just a really rich and creamy hot chocolate, with just a little pumpkin spice to keep things festive. And, of course, you can jazz it up however you like with Halloween sprinkles! Enjoy!!

Halloween Hot Chocolate
Ingredients
Hot Chocolate
- 1/3 Cup Cocoa Powder see notes
- 1/4 Cup Maple Syrup
- 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
- 1/2 Tsp Pumpkin Pie Spice or more, to taste
- 4 Cups Unsweetened Almond Milk see notes
- 3/4 Cup Finely Chopped Dark Chocolate see notes
Toppings
- Whipped Cream
- Halloween Sprinkles
Boozy Version
- 4 oz Vanilla Vodka
Instructions
- Add the cocoa powder, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and pumpkin pie spice to a large saucepot. Do not start the stove yet. Pour in about 1/4 of a cup of the almond milk, and whisk everything together until all of the cocoa powder is incorporated (this is easier to do with a small amount of almond milk at first rather than adding it all at once).
- Then, add in the rest of the almond milk and the chopped semisweet chocolate.
- Put the pot on the stove at medium-low heat. Whisk constantly until all of the chocolate solids are completely melted. If needed, reduce the heat to low to prevent the hot chocolate from bubbling.
- When done, take the hot chocolate off the heat. When it's cool enough, do a taste test and determine if you want to add more maple syrup for sweetness, or cocoa / pumpkin pie spice for flavor.
- If making the boozy version, add in the vanilla vodka here, and whisk it into the hot chocolate.
- Serve the hot chocolate in coffee cups or mugs. Add on whipped cream on top to your liking, then top with Halloween sprinkles.
- Enjoy!
Notes
- This recipe makes four small cups of hot chocolate, or two very large cups.
- I prefer almond milk in hot chocolate recipes, but you can use regular milk of course.
- Be sure to use cocoa powder, not cacao powder!
- For the chocolate, you can either use semisweet baking chips, or a bar of dark chocolate that is at least 70% cacao.
- I don’t like my hot chocolate super sweet, so feel to whisk in more maple syrup if you have a sweet tooth! :)

Halloween Hot Chocolate FAQs
How long does this hot chocolate last?
This Halloween Hot Chocolate lasts 2-3 days in the fridge! Be sure to store it separate from the whipped cream – always add whipped cream as the last step.
What’s the difference between hot cocoa and hot chocolate?
Generally, these two terms often are used interchangeably. But technically, hot chocolate refers to a hot drink that contains real, melted chocolate; whereas hot cocoa just contains cocoa powder.
Is hot chocolate best with milk or water?
I prefer making hot chocolate with almond milk for a richer, deeper flavor. Water is fine, but it will have less depth of flavor.
What makes this a Halloween Hot Chocolate?
There are two parts to this recipe that make it festive for Halloween:
- Pumpkin pie spice – obviously, we’re going to use the season’s most delicious and ubiquitous spice blend in this recipe!
- Halloween sprinkles – use whatever Halloween sprinkles you have on hand – orange or black jimmies, googly eyes, or other fun Halloween shapes!
