Sunday Sutra: Crown Chakra Smoothie

Sunday Sutra: Crown Chakra Smoothie | Well and Full | #vegan #yoga

Today’s Sunday Sutra involves the seventh and final chakra – the Sahasrara, or crown chakra. This is the energy center of spirituality, of the divine, and of transcendence. It can mean something different for everyone – God, karma, a Great Intelligence, a higher power, etc. Being raised a Roman Catholic, I have a fairly traditional view of God but with a yogic twist. After all, in the Bible, Christ Himself says, “The kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17:21)

This is my interpretation – God is the Architect of the Universe, the Great Intelligence, the Alpha and Omega. I look at the tranquil woods, or the magnificent view from the top of a mountain, and am filled with absolute certainty that this beauty does not just exist, but was created. God is so great that He is present within every atom of His creation. Thus, we are all divine. We are created in His image. While we have the choice to live our lives the way we desire – in goodness or in maleficence – we all contain the potentiality to be divine. Through prayer and meditation can we tap into this awesome possibility that we contain within ourselves.

In quantum mechanics, there are four fundamental forces in the universe – gravitational, electromagnetic, strong nuclear, and weak nuclear. And although modern science can’t explain the emergence of cognition from the cellular structure of our brains, we do know that our minds are governed by electrical impulses that send messages to our bodies. Thus, the brain operates within the electromagnetic field of energy in the Universe. Via carrier particles (known as bosons), the brain is susceptible to electromagnetic activity throughout the world. At this level, subatomic particle physicists start to differ in their theories of exactly how this relates to consciousness. But we do know that at the most basic level, the electric impulses in our brains ARE our thoughts.

With this logic, one could argue that concentrated thought, like prayer or meditation, is essentially a concentration of the electromagnetic force. Furthermore, it has been well documented that electromagnetic forces physically affect and change the environment around us. So it’s not a stretch to argue that concentrated thought can actually affect our bodies, at least at an atomic level. This is a physical manifestation of the divine ability within us, the power of our minds to change our physical environment.

Whether you believe in God or the Divine, maybe today think about the power within your mind; the power to transcend what we already know into the realm of the unexplored.

Can you suggest good basic reading material which I can read to understand further the basic yogic ideas about which you teach in your wonderful posts? I find this so very interesting; I used to enjoy yoga very much until a couple of broken bones in one year have caused me to have to postpone further practice. But I still wish to learn and understand. I like the spiritual interpretation you give; as an Episcopalian, I am not far removed from the Catholic teachings you referenced. And I love the combining of science/theoretical physics with spirituality. Thank you! I love your posts.

Thank you so much for leaving a note, Donice! I love hearing from my readers :) My favorite book concerning yoga is The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga by Deepak Chopra, who is an M.D. This book delves into the chakras a little bit, but is written on the broader theme of the spiritual aspect of yoga. It also contains a decent amount of yogic history as context. I can’t recommend it enough! :D

Such a fantastic post, I want to send a link to my dad – I think he would really appreciate your thoughts about prayer and meditation and quantum mechanics as these are basically his favourite things. I can’t wait to check out your other chakra smoothie posts and delve in. Really, really love this!
