Today’s Sunday Sutra is about the third eye, or Ajna, chakra. This chakra is associated with the pituitary gland, known as the “master gland” of the body as it regulates the function of many other endocrine glands. The third eye chakra is also associated with intuition, understanding, and clairvoyant activity. Now, I know I may have lost a few of you at the mention of clairvoyance, but hear me out – clairvoyance is defined as the phenomenon of sensing or perceiving things outside of “normal” sensory contact (like seeing, hearing, smelling, or touching.) When you think about it this way, you’ll find that most of us have had clairvoyant experiences. That feeling you get when you walk past a shady character when you’re alone at night? That’s pure intuition. Or the feeling you get when you meet a kindred spirit for the first time, when you just know that you’ll be friends? That’s outside of normal sensory contact, but feels just as real as if you had touched or heard something.
Maybe science can’t fully explain how we just intuitively “know” things – yet. There’s a lot that science hasn’t been able to explain in the past. Remember how everyone used to think that sun revolved around the earth? Science just hadn’t caught up yet. And I know that science will one day catch up with this, too. The brain is the last frontier of the human body. We still can’t explain how human consciousness has emerged from neurons and synapses, but no one sits around and tries to convince you that you don’t think. So why is the concept of knowing things outside of our normal senses so much more extreme?
To liberate your third eye chakra, allow yourself to listen to your inner voice; your intuition. Maybe that means meditating quietly and allowing your inner voice to have the chance to speak. Or maybe that could mean going with your “gut” feeling on something. Either way, don’t dismiss your intuition or ability to perceive outside of your senses. It’s just as real as your ability to see, hear, or think.
